Student publications
CA NSHK UKC.JOUR-6 · Series · 17 Oct 1980 - 9 Feb 2012
Part of University of King's College School of Journalism fonds

Series consists of publications that students created as a component of their course work. Many of the publications contain stories relating to campus life or Halifax communities. The newspaper publications are tabloid size and printed in black ink (later issues are often in colour, although the use of colouring is used sporadically from the late 1980s and onward). Some of the publications are in magazine format and printed in colour .

Series contains the journalistic publications of the School of Journalism. The publications represent the culmination of various projects by students working toward certain classes, or else are part of honours projects by fourth-year and one-year BJ students. For the most part they are general-interest newspapers and magazines, but there are also topic- and region- or neighbourhood-focused publications, as well as wire and online services.

The newspapers were distributed around campus, at Dalhousie University, and throughout the city (especially in the case of the North End News) in public libraries, bookstores and magazine shops, and elsewhere. Director George Bain remarked in his five-year report of 1984 to the Board of Governors that the Monitor was distributed to news executives across the country (for the most part in order to gamer favourable comments).

NovaNewsNet, a daily email sent to subscribers, was a synopsis of local, regional, national and international headline stories. Unews is a website that contains articles about metro universities.

Student records
CA NSHK UKC.REG-7 · Series · 1886 - 2009
Part of University of King's College Registrar's Office Fonds

The student records series is the largest series of records in the Archives. The series consists of the individual academic records of students who matriculated at the University of King's College between 1886 and 2009. The records before 1922 relate to the University's campus in Windsor, Nova Scotia, while records after that date were created at the University's Halifax location .

The student records were generated by the Registrar's Office staff, who create a file folder for each student who applies to King's. If the student subsequently enrolls, the file is maintained through the student's academic career at the University, recording the student's academic activities and progress. Correspondence from a prospective student who later registered enrolled is filed in that person's student record in this series, not in the Registrar's Office correspondence series. If the student is not accepted or does not enroll, the file is kept for one year in case the student reapplies.

During the processing of the student records, attempts were made to resolve ambiguities in student names and dates. A few of the student records show no evidence that the student ever completed enrolment or took a class at King's, or else the student enrolled and started classes a year or more later. In those cases, the record is filed with the year the student started taking classes, if that can be determined. If it cannot, then the record is filed according to the year the identification number was issued.

There are many gaps in the student records holdings in the Archives. The first student record is from 1886, and for the next two decades, there are no more than three records per year. At times, the policy was to destroy student records after the student left King's; for several years in the 1980s, the only remaining record of a student is a Kardex card (13 cm x 20 cm), with courses typed on it, grades, awards and degrees noted, and usually a small photograph of the student stapled on the lower right corner of the card.

Student societies
CA NSHK UKC.KSU-9 · Series · 1845 - 2007
Part of University of King’s College King’s Students’ Union Fonds

The series consists of materials produced by many of the Student Societies that have flourished at King's. Among them are the minute books of the oldest college debating society in North America the Quintilian, founded in 1845; North America's longest standing collegial literary society, the Haliburton, established in 1884; a lively dramatic society, King's Theatrical Society, founded in 1931, the largest per capita student theatre society in North America; the Day Students'
Society; and numerous student groups reflecting the special interests of King's College students over the years, such as the [blank], the [blank], and the [blank].

Although the oldest societies pre-date the KSU, they have been included here because they are now funded by KSU.

The files include publications issued by a society.
