            Journals
            CA NSHK HDP-4 · Series · 1969 - 2012
Part of Henry Drake Petersen fonds

Series consists of journals that Henry Drake Petersen wrote from 1969 until three months before his death in 2012. Most of the journals are Blueline brand hardbound black volumes with lined page

Petersen wrote over three million words in his journals. They include his thoughts about his work in the Library and on King's committees, his plans for the future, his friendships with a number of people, his daily routines, visits to
and from friends and family members, and lists of books he read. The last journals record the thoughts of a man confronted by a diagnosis of a terminal disease, trying to come to terms with the knowledge of his impending death, his
concerns for how his mother would receive the news, and the comfort it gave him to have people support him, such as when his cousin Alida told him she would be with him to see it through.

The Librarian writes an annual report to the President regarding Library activities and operations during the preceding year. The reports contain information about accessions, budgets, cataloguing, circulation, staffing and Archives, and discussion of future directions for the Library. The biographies folder contains photocopies of obituaries and notices of appointment to the Library staff. The Library Sustentation Fund, begun in May 11, 1881, was meant to collect monies to keep the Library in repair. A proper Library Fund was established in 1892. In 1942, it was clarified that the Librarian was in charge of the Library Fund, and the money was to be used for books. It is unclear when the Library Endowment Fund was created, but according to a minute from the 1950s, it was administered by the Librarian, and was built up primarily through the work of Librarian Bums Martin.

Sub-series consists of correspondence, statements, invoices, and ledger sheets.
