Oxenden, Ashton

Second Bishop of Montreal; Second Metropolitan of Canada.

Ashton Oxenden was born in Barnham, Canterbury, England. He obtained a B.A. from Oxford University in 1831, and was ordained deacon in 1832 at Lambeth Palace Chapel, then priest in 1833. He was curate of Barham, Kent, England from 1832 to 1838. In 1838, his clerical duties were suspended due to poor health. In 1847, he was able to return to work, and became curate of Silsoe, Bedfordshire, England, then in 1848, he became rector of Pluckley, with Pevington, Kent, England, where he remained until 1869. He received an M.A. from Oxford in 1859, and married Sarah Bradshaw in 1864. He was consecrated Bishop of Montreal in 1869, and received an honourary D.D. from Oxford. He also received an honourary D.D. from University of Bishop's College, Lennoxville, Quebec in 1871. He also wrote My First Year in Canada to raise funds for the diocese. He resigned as Bishop in 1878, and became Chaplain of Christ Church in Cannes, France until 1879. He then returned to England to become Vicar in Hackington, Kent until 1885. From 1885 onward, he lived in England for four months of the year, and then in Biarritz, France for the rest of time. He assisted the chaplain there, and published lectures as the Barham Tracts and the Pluckley Tracts. In all, he published 116 pamphlets, and wrote The History of My Life in 1891. These writings were popular and sold very well. He passed away in 1892 in Biarritz, France.

Perrin, William Willcox

Second Bishop of British Columbia; Bishop of Willesden.

William Willcox Perrin was born in Westbury-on-Trym, England in 1848. He obtained a B.A. from Oxford University in 1870, and was ordained deacon in 1871, then prierst in 1872. He was curate of St. Mary's Church in Southampton from 1871 to 1882, and became Vicar of St. Luke's Church in Southampton in 1881. He obtained an M.A. from Oxford in 1873. He was consecrated Bishop of British Columbia in 1893, and received an honourary D.D. from Oxford. He was made an honourary fellow of King's College in London in 1901, and received an honourary D.C.L. from the University of King's College in Windsor, Nova Scotia in 1910. He was translated to the See of Willesden, England in 1911, and remained there as Suffragan Bishop until he died in 1934.

Pinkham, William Cyprian

Second Bishop of Saskatchewan (with Calgary); First Bishop of Calgary.

William Cyprian Pinkham was born in St. John's Newfoundland in 1844, and was educated privately and at the Church of England Academy in St. John's. He married Jean Anne Drever in 1868, and was ordained deacon that same year in London, Ontario. He was incumbent of St. James, Manitoba from 1868 to 1882, and was ordained priest in 1869. In 1871, he became Superintendent of Education for Protestant Schools of Manitoba, a post he held until 1883. He was granted an honourary B.D. from Lambeth in 1879, and was a founding member of the Manitoba Historical Society. He was secretary of the Diocesan Synod of Rupert's Land from 1881 to 1887, as well as Canon of St. John's Cathedral in Winnipeg and Examining Chaplain to the Lord Bishop of Rupert's Land. He was also acting Rector of All Saints' Church in Winnipeg from 1883 to 1884. He was consecrated Bishop of Saskatchewan in 1887, and received two honourary degrees, including a D.D. from St. John's College, University of Manitoba; and a D.C.L. from Trinity University, Toronto. He was also made an honourary fellow of St. Augustine's College in Canterbury. In 1888, he was also appointed to the See of Calgary, thus becoming the Shop of Saskatchewan and Calgary. He resigned the See of Saskatchewan in 1809, but remained Bishop of Calgary until he resigned in 1926. In 1909, he received an honourary D.C.L. from the University of Alberta. He passed away in 1928.

Pomeroy, Elsie

Elsie Pomoroy was an Ontario teacher and author. Born in Fullerton, Ontario in 1886, she moved to Toronto, Ontario in 1914 and remained there for the rest of her life. She wrote and published a biography on poet Sir Charles G. D. Roberts in 1943, and later published more work on him. She passed away in 1968.

Edwin John Pratt was a poet and professor of English from Western Bay, Newfoundland. He was born in 1882, and attended Methodist College in St. John's, Newfoundland. In 1907, he entered Victoria College at the University of Toronto, where her studied psychology and theology, receiving his BA in 1911. He then received a Bachelor of Divinity in 1913, and joined the university as a lecturer on psychology. He obtained his PhD in 1917. He joined the Faculty of English in 1920, and taught there until his retirement in 1953.

His works of poetry include Rachel (1917), Newfoundland Verse (1923), The Witches' Brew (1925), The Titans (1926), The Roosevelt and the Antinoe (1930), The Titantic (1935), Brébeuf and His Brethren (1940), Dunkirk (1941), Still Life and Other Verse (1943), Collected Poems (1944), They Are Returning (1945), Behind the Log (1947), and Towards the Last Spike (1952).

Raddall, Thomas Head

Thomas Head Raddall was born in Kent, England in 1903, and emigrated to Canada at age 10 with his family. He was a writer of historical novels, as well as a marine telegraph operator and bookkeeper. He passed away in 1994.

His publications include His Majesty’s Yankees (1942), Halifax, Warden of the North (1948), and other short story collections and novels.
