MacDonald, Stanislaus Perry

Stanislaus Perry MacDonald was a Roman Catholic Priest from Inverness County, Nova Scotia. He was born in 1883 in Broad Cove, and was the brother to Nova Scotia premier Angus L. MacDonald. He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1911, then from Grand Seminary, Quebec in 1917, where he was then ordained. He went on to serve at various parishes around Nova Scotia, before retiring to Sydney, Nova Scotia in 1966. He passed away on Feb. 1, 1970 in Sydney.

Nova Scotia Drama League

The Nova Scotia Drama League was founded in 1949 at a meeting jointly called by the Division of Adult Education and the Dominion Drama Festival Regional Committee. It was then incorporated by a Nova Scotia provincial statue in 1951. In 2004, it merged with the Nova Scotia Professional Theatre Association to form Theatre Nova Scotia.

Pratt, E. J.

Edwin John Pratt was a poet and professor of English from Western Bay, Newfoundland. He was born in 1882, and attended Methodist College in St. John's, Newfoundland. In 1907, he entered Victoria College at the University of Toronto, where her studied psychology and theology, receiving his BA in 1911. He then received a Bachelor of Divinity in 1913, and joined the university as a lecturer on psychology. He obtained his PhD in 1917. He joined the Faculty of English in 1920, and taught there until his retirement in 1953.

His works of poetry include Rachel (1917), Newfoundland Verse (1923), The Witches' Brew (1925), The Titans (1926), The Roosevelt and the Antinoe (1930), The Titantic (1935), Brébeuf and His Brethren (1940), Dunkirk (1941), Still Life and Other Verse (1943), Collected Poems (1944), They Are Returning (1945), Behind the Log (1947), and Towards the Last Spike (1952).

Robertson, Samuel S.

Samuel S. Robertson was war correspondent during the Second World War. Born in 1905 in Glasgow, Scotland, he joined the Canadian Press in 1918 at the age of 13, as a night messenger. In 1931, he was placed in charge of the CP night desk, and in 1937, became the CP superintendent in New York. In 1939, he travelled to the United Kingdom to be a war correspondent and CP London Superintendent. He was killed in May 1941 in a U-boat attack off the coast of Ireland, while aboard the SS Nerissa.

Raddall, Thomas Head

Thomas Head Raddall was born in Kent, England in 1903, and emigrated to Canada at age 10 with his family. He was a writer of historical novels, as well as a marine telegraph operator and bookkeeper. He passed away in 1994.

His publications include His Majesty’s Yankees (1942), Halifax, Warden of the North (1948), and other short story collections and novels.

Frederick George Scott was an Anglican priest and poet born in Montreal, Quebec in 1861. He was ordained in 1886, and enlisted in 1914 to serve as Senior Chaplain to the the 1st Canadian Division. He passed away in 1944 in Quebec City.
